The Owczarek Podhalanski (or Podhalan Sheepdog as it also affectionately called) captivates by its high intelligence. It is just as self-confident as sensitively, reservedly and distrustfully strangers opposite, incorruptibly, self-willed, partly stubbornly and very independently in its actions. A well socialized dog is friendly and never agressiv. Its threshold of sensation is clearly higher in relation to the Russian herd protection dogs. To its humans it develops a very close connection, which has as a consequence that he places himself in danger situations selbstlos before her.

Normaly is sufficient however already its impressive feature as well as a deep, nearly thunder-like, Grollen, now and then also connected with simulated attacks, in order to protect its district and/or his herd against dangers. Active attacking always represents the last possibility, if does not help everything else. It is suitable also for the Begleithundepruefung, should against it from o.a. A substantial meaning for the well-being of the Podhalan Sheepdog is a family, to which he has full contact, then by regular "snuggeling or stroking moments" the connections between humans and the Podhalan Sheepdog is ever continued to maintain and/or deepened. Dearest he lives with his family together in the house, if possible with free entrance to the garden.

Although he loves to stay in the free, the Owczare Podhalanski is not suitable for a kennel or a chain attitude! The ideal surrounding field for a Podhalan Sheepdog represents a house with as large a garden as possible with security, which it can guard as district. For these dogs is a task and a healthy measure of movement as well as alternation very important.
The people who have tolerant neighbours, are by the way clear in the advantage, because the Owczarek Podhalanski is inclined to make attentive with barking on itself if for instance foreigner to its district approach.

The Podhalan Sheepdog can accompany his human(s) everywhere whether on shopping, in the restaurant (as it is to be seen on the left picture) or where also always.
The close connection to its herd leads to the fact that it should be if possible carried forward with journeys or the like or be cared for however at home by it trusted a person.
When that is not possible, should an accommodation in a dog pension take place only if this has experiences in handling herd protection dogs.
